As an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMC), a lay person serves the Catholic Church by distributing Holy Communion during Mass. The Ordinary Ministers of Communion are bishops, priests, and deacons, but at times Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are needed. Anyone who is or desires to be an EMC should understand that it is an extreme privilege, not a right, and will only be needed after all the Ordinary Ministers have been counted to distribute Holy Communion.
